Manufacturing software in Kolkata: ERP, MES, quality and machine data
ERP plans and accounts for production; MES, quality and machine-data software capture what actually happens on the floor — and a factory needs both to see real WIP, OEE and traceability.

ERP vs MES vs the rest
ERP holds the bill of materials, planning, purchasing, inventory and finance. MES (manufacturing execution) sits under it: works-order execution, material issue, operator bookings, scrap and rework, and a live view of work in progress.
Around those two sit quality software (inspections, non-conformance, corrective action), maintenance software (preventive schedules, breakdown logs), and machine-data capture (counts, cycle time, downtime reasons). You rarely need all of it on day one — but you should know where each fits.
Shop-floor software done right
Give operators a tablet or a simple terminal, not a form to fill at end of shift. Capture start/stop, quantity, scrap and downtime reason at the machine, and OEE becomes a real number instead of an estimate.
The measure of success is not the dashboard — it is whether a supervisor trusts the WIP figure enough to act on it.
Quality, traceability and compliance
Batch and lot genealogy — which raw material lot went into which finished batch — is what lets you contain a problem instead of recalling everything.
Add structured non-conformance and CAPA, inline and final inspections, and GST e-invoice / e-way bill in the same system, and an audit becomes a report rather than a fire drill.

Frequently asked questions
- Do we need MES if we already have an ERP?
- If your ERP shows planned production but not what is actually happening on the floor right now — real WIP, scrap, downtime — then yes, an MES layer is what closes that gap.
- What is OEE and can software measure it automatically?
- Overall Equipment Effectiveness combines availability, performance and quality into one figure. Software can calculate it automatically once machine counts and downtime reasons are captured at source.
- How do we phase a manufacturing software rollout?
- ERP core (BOM, inventory, purchasing, works orders, GST) first, then shop-floor execution and OEE, then quality and traceability, then maintenance and machine integration.
